The Sundarbans Eco Village from Bangladesh, implemented by the Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS), exemplifies a holistic approach to environmental sustainability and community development in the disaster-prone Sundarbans coastal region of Bangladesh. The Eco Village initiative encompasses green housing, green business, and green education, focusing on climate change adaptation, nature-based solutions, and sustainable livelihoods through integrated agriculture, fisheries, and forestry. The initiative’s achievements include the restoration of 150 hectares of mangrove forests, provision of renewable energy solutions to over 3,100 families, and ensuring safe drinking water for 12,000 people through solar-powered filtration systems. The project also promotes community-based ecotourism and the production and marketing of mangrove-based products, significantly enhancing local income and resilience against climatic disasters. Recognized for its impact, the Eco Village project has won numerous awards and was showcased at Expo 2020 Dubai’s Global Best Practice Program. This initiative not only improves the socio-economic conditions of the local population but also contributes to biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation, setting a model for replication across Bangladesh and beyond.
