Urban Biodiversity Conservation project through creating an Eco Museum by the participatory approach of civil society in Khulna city of Bangladesh

Khulna is the 3rd largest city of Bangladesh after Dhaka and Chittagong. This city is located in south-western part of Bangladesh. It covers a total area of 45.65 square kilometer and population is more than 1.5 million. Once upon a time, Khulna city was full with vegetation and biodiversity. But to meet up the residential and livelihood demand of the increased population and rapid industrialization most of the forests are drastically decreased which is the main cause of urban biodiversity destruction. Using its past biodiversity conservation experience BEDS has been implementing a project entitled "Urban Biodiversity Conservation project through creating an Eco Museum by the participatory approach of civil society in Khulna city of Bangladesh" with the financial assistance of Keidanren Nature Conservation Fund (KNCF) since 2018. Under this project 31 urban biodiversity conservation youth club has been formed under the project and they are working to conserve the biodiversity of their respective wards. It is extremely true that biodiversity have great significance to maintain the natural balance and they are inseparable part of our daily life. So, all sorts of people including Government, Companies, NGOs, Civil Society, Teachers, Students, Journalist and others should come forward to conserve the urban biodiversity by their own willingness. Otherwise, in near future there will be no biodiversity in the city which may have a very negative impact on the environment and our future generation may lose the opportunity to grow with nature. Overall goal of the project is to make an urban biodiversity corridor museum in Khulna city through conserving biodiversity such as birds, animals, fishes and trees with the engagement of civil society, government, companies and students for making a bridge between city people and urban biodiversity. The objective of the project are to create a community platform on urban biodiversity conservation by involving key multi stakeholders of Khulna City, raise urban biodiversity issues towards city people and policy makers, to bring behavioral change of the city people regarding urban biodiversity, conserve existing urban biodiversity habitats of Khulna City, to create a biotope for new habitats of urban biodiversity, make a guideline and biodiversity corridor map on Khulna City.
